Parc Natural del Montgrí, Les Illes Medes i el Baix Ter
Since 1990 and thanks to Law 19/1990 for the protection and conservation of the flora and fauna of the sea bed of the Medes Islands, the protected area of the Medes Islands has become one of the most important in the Mediterranean.
The Natural Park is located between the Baix Empordà and the Alt Empordà, in the northeast of Catalonia, about 50 km from the French border and in the middle of the Costa Brava.
It extends from L’Escala in the north to Pals in the south and occupies more than 8,000 hectares, 2,000 of which are maritime. The name of the park already indicates the variety of landscapes and singular elements that we can find: The Montgrí massif, Les Illes Medes (with its emerged and submerged part) and the Plana del Baix Ter. The park is made up of 8 municipalities with a great wealth of natural and historical heritage and some with a great deal of tourism.
Medes Islands are made up of 7 islets that form a landscape of great beauty, unique in Catalonia. The marine environment makes them exceptional. The coral walls, the posidonia prairies, the caves and underwater tunnels stand out.
Almost all the underwater environments of the western Mediterranean are represented on its seabed, which gives it an exceptional and almost unique ecological value.
The presence of large fish, such as groupers, common eagle ray, corb, zebra sea breams and gilthead breams stands out. Also relevant are pelagic predators, such as barracudas, bluefin tuna and occasionally, bottle-nosed dolphins attracted by the abundance of food.
